New Website

Welcome to 3D Squirrel and our new website.  Here you will find news on our ventures and discover insights and teaser images of our future 3D model products.  We’ll be hosting our next range of digital models via a new domain cgscifi.com which is on track to open in the next few weeks.

3D Squirrel is restructuring the way it delivers it’s products and services in the future and both this  website and cgscifi.com are the first steps in this process.  We started off with a simple marketplace in 2012 and have scaled considerably with the popularity of premade online assets in the computer graphics industry.  It’s difficult to imagine working on a CG project now without sourcing assets online to save time and money.  With ever tighter deadlines and slim budgets, premade assets are the only practical way to meet today’s delivery deadlines and criteria.

When we reviewed our marketplace earlier this year, we found a clear trend towards kit-based products, ‘premade’ of course but also ‘preset’.  In other words, assets that can be used to enhance and populate a scene repeatedly.  In the pre-digital days of visual/special effects, physical model building for film production was known as ‘kit-bashing’, scavenging parts from dozens of plastic models to assemble a miniature set.  Borrowing components to fabricate your own original vision satisfyingly speeds up the creative process.  This is where we had the most success and so our plan to build our new store was born.

Our new cgscifi.com site will continue in the tradition of visual/special effects by providing digital kit based assets and ranges in the industrial sci-fi genre.  Our aim is to hone the production of these presets so we can control the consistency of their design and delivery.  We intend to offer comprehensive ‘ranges’ with parts and components as well as hero objects and infrastructure so artists have the flexibility to customise and assemble without breaking off from their process.

With content productivity now at the core of our plan, a change was inevitable for 3D Squirrel.  We are substituting our marketplace for a store where we can focus and build on our most successful model types.  We had a great time scaling the marketplace and being part of such an enthusiastic and talented community of vendors so we are sad to see it go.  However, we are equally excited to welcome in our new modelling venture and share our digital worlds with you.

    1. Thank you, we like sci-fi too and we think it’s pretty popular generally…just overlooked in the 3d model market so we intend to fix that.

    1. We will show some more previews soon. There will be some individual models but also packs/kits so users can get kit-bashing immediately.

  5. Will you have high poly and low poly collections?

    1. Thanks for the question. We will release ranges that are high and low polygon but also mid-poly. Low polygon relies a lot on textures for the detail. High polygon models that can be smoothed (sub-d) will have plenty of detail but may limit some users due to the memory requirements for rendering so we’ve opted for mid-poly to start with. Mid-poly hard surface gives you plenty of detail but stays manageable in a large scene for the majority of users.

  6. Hi, will be new sci-fi marketplace for all 3D artists or only some verified users will be allowed to sell there?

Pavel Frumert November 25, 2017 Reply
    1. Hi Pavel, cgscifi.com will be a store that sells in-house products only. We may consider verified contributors as a future development. Thanks for your question.
